Michael Burton Sr.

Presents

"The Kevin Burton Music Site"

In August 1975 I promoted my first major concert featuring Soul Train recording artist "The Whispers", Dorothy Morrison("Oh Happy Day"). On the same show was an up an coming band called "Raw Soul" that I had promoted in a number of shows all around Northern California. The band was "awesome" and I found my niche.

By the way, the band featured the talents of lead vocalist Frankie Beverly. Signing a recording contract with Capitol Records and changing its name to "Maze featuring Frankie Beverly", a major success story was born.

Early in 1975 I would meet and use Kevin to open that show and to musically accompany a Magican that I would fly in ( we had never seen a magician! - "Goldfinger & Dove"). All I knew about him was he could play the keyboards. We would find out later that we are related.

Some time later, I would take it to the next level. Maze wanted to add more keyboards and I suggested Kevin.
Done deal. The rest is History.

"Now turn up your speakers"

FUNDRAISING vs. ARTISTIC GENIUS. What is it about the artist that cringes at the thought of selling, marketing and entering into the public relations arena? Why is it that we feel that because we CREATED the masterpiece (sculpture, book, concerto, jewelry, painting) then our job is done? Then we sit and wait as we eat ramein noodles, sugar-butter sandwiches and sneak jelly packages from the deli so we can have jelly with our peanut butter, as we cry into our room temperature water about how we are too poor to even buy our own artwork. I'm speaking from experience--as an award winning author who cannot afford to purchase her own books. How do I turn the corner?

First off, no one knows the artist's work better than the artist. I have found in every scenario the potential buyers and audiences are always fascinated by the presence of the actual "creator" of a work and doubly fascinated behind the story of the given artwork. Even myself, I am intrigued by what makes another genius artist tick. What sparks their creative juices? I love hearing about before they became artistically inclined, their past, their childhood, how they picked a particular medium of expression. I am intrigued by not only their successes but especially by their failures. Within the power of every other artist just might be the power of me. Can I do that? Should I do that? How can I better improve what I am called to do based on what I've witnessed? Is there now, with the knowing of another artist, the knowledge of an even better artist in me? Has this artist caused me to rise to another level and fine tune my own creative prowess?

When I think about this and how valuable other artists are to me, then I begin to think about how valuable I could and must be to other potential writers, knitters, athletes, bowlers, chefs, sculptors, musicians. Ultimately I am finding that people will pay for that knowledge, buy our goods because of that knowledge.

I think it boils down to vulnerability. When I create a poem or sketch, it comes always from a place of vulnerability. I step outside the confines of my flesh and let my soul take over. And on a good day, I have something beautiful or worthy to show for my stepping outside of the box of me. Sometimes that creative space doesn't feel good, or normal or comfortable or familiar or even safe. Then I have to become vulnerable again as I put myself in front of my artwork and then try to sell the results of my artistic endeavors. I then find myself straddling the here and now of--will my work sell and be accepted--with the vulnerability of the there and then of brazen availability to the artistic muse and whimsy of creative genius. It is not comfortable to stand in both dimensions at the same time.

Ultimately my fear is the reality of rejection. Leaving the auction, the flea market, the book fair, the signing without a sale. Hosting a fundraiser for my cause, using my artwork, spending $300 in order to raise $30,000 and ending the day with $15 in a mayonnaise jar that said, THE POWER OF CHANGE.
