Assad’s victims given voice in haunting new film

“Syria’s Disappeared: The Case against Assad,” Alhummada describes in stomach-turning detail what happened next.

“They brought a clamp and it has a handle that he’d put around the penis,” Alhummada says. “Of course, after stripping you of underwear and you remain naked as God created you. And he put the clamp and started tightening and tightening and tightening, squeezing your penis until you feel like he’s going to cut [it] off. … And a man from behind puts a pole up your anus and is hitting you like this. … The human brain can’t imagine it.”

Louima trial: New York cop pleads guilty to immigrant's torture

Justin A. Volpe entered a guilty plea Tuesday May 26 to all the charges against him in connection with the stationhouse torture of Haitian immigrant Abner Louima in August 1997.

Speaking in a voice cracking with emotion, the New York City cop, who had formerly proclaimed his innocence, admitted to beating Louima in a patrol car and then taking him into the bathroom of Brooklyn's 70th Precinct where he rammed a broken piece of a broom into his rectum. Louima was subsequently hospitalized with massive internal injuries. Volpe went on to admit that he had threatened to kill Louima if he uttered a word about what he had done to him.

Torture and the United States includes documented and alleged cases of torture both inside and outside the United States by members of the U.S. government, the U.S. military, U.S. law enforcement agencies, U.S. intelligence agencies, U.S. health care services, and other U.S. public organizations.

While the term "torture" is defined in numerous places, including dictionaries and encyclopedias of various nations or cultures, this article only addresses the legal definition of the term, under the codified and case law of the United States of America. After the U.S. Wikipedia

The American Torture Story has been buried for far too long.

One year ago, a 6,900 page report was released exposing human rights violations. But shockingly, the Justice Department has apparently not even read the full report, and and is barring other federal agencies from reading it. The Justice Department can't bury the truth.

The American Torture Story starts like this:

The U.S. disappeared more than 100 men from 2002 to 2008. Many were tortured, humiliated and otherwise abused. The government used clinical words like "enhanced interrogation" and "stress positions" to obscure the truth, including:

Forced rectal feeding used to humiliate and exert control over men;

→ Men hung naked except for diapers, shackled into positions where they were forcibly deprived of sleep -- in some cases lasting for several days;

→ One "technique" involved stripping men, wrapping their naked bodies in Mylar tape, and dragging them up and down hallways while punching and slapping them.

There are more than 6,000 pages to this American Torture Story: a Senate committee spent years reviewing millions of government documents to piece together a landmark report known as the "Senate torture report."

More than ever before, we know how and why these abuses occurred.This is a story that had to be told - and now it must be read. Shockingly, the Justice Department is apparently refusing to read it, even though the agency should be reviewing any new evidence of criminal wrongdoing. Instead, the Justice Department is keeping the report locked away in a sealed envelope and urging other federal departments and agencies to do the same.

America is more accepting of torture than most other countries

Americans’ attitudes towards torture have hardened over the past decade and a half, according to a new global survey of public views on war.

Nearly half (46%) of Americans polled by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) think it is acceptable to torture captured enemy combatants “to obtain important military information”. And 33% believe that torture is a “part of war”.

Only Nigerians (70%) and Israelis (50%) were more comfortable than Americans with the idea of torturing enemy fighters.
