James Paige a gifted student athlete, a 1965 graduate of Germantown High School and a 1970 graduate of Virginia State College was well liked and popular in high school and college. Upon graduation he spent much of his professional career as a youth worker in New York State. Jimmy, his twin brother Billy and two older sisters came from a stable family in the Germantown section of Philadelphia.
Several years ago Jimmy was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) also called Lou Gehrig’s disease. ALS is a debilitating degenerative disease that attacks the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control muscle movement, gradually paralyzing the patient over time. Jimmy is a paraplegic but his spirits remain high, he is mentally alert and he retains his effervescent personality. He still enjoys chatting with visitors, watching sports and listening to audio books.
The disease requires a lot of physical support, out patient doctor visits and special equipment. They do have visiting services but recently Cheryl and a group of Jimmy’s childhood buddies and college friends Cheryl calls Team Jimmy created a Go Fund Me campaign to help defray costs for equipment, transportation and the additional home support services Jimmy needs. The goal is to raise $20,000 from family members, friends, former coworkers, Germantown High School and Virginia State Alumni, Jimmy’s Kappa brothers and other organizations he and Cheryl are affiliated with. But anyone can contribute.
