Story: Model or Die 101

Model or Die, Is it in you? Are you ready to sacrifice money, sleep and relationships to succeed as a REAL model? Let’s start with the basics. Let us examine how Merriam-Webster defines the word “Model” and then I will present a physical definition.

*Merriam-Webster - Model
A person or thing that serves as a pattern for an artist; especially one who poses for an artist. One who is employed to display clothes or other merchandise.
Someone or something set before one for guidance or imitation.

A person or thing that serves as a pattern for an artist.

Previously, an artist was defined as a painter, architect or sculptor. This means a person who poses for an artist to replicate, convey or enhance an image. In contemporary terms, an artist can be a lyricist, musician, painter, director, graphic artist, writer, sculptor, photographer or designer (as the second definition informs).

Someone or something set before one for guidance or imitation.

Is a young lady gyrating to over misogynous lyrics and a rhythmic beat in front of an artist (director), set before one for guidance? What about a beautiful woman with her posterior as the main attraction on the cover of an artist’s forum (magazine). Is she honestly being employed to display clothes?

It seems that many young women are using these avenues to excel as Eye Candy/Vixen Models. Many of these are not respected and are considered groupies and escorts as some are paid in merchandise, sex and perks rather than through legitimate avenues.

This type of modeling is the easiest, most dangerous and short-lived. It’s easy, because you don’t have to learn the basics of modeling. A portfolio, resume and/or composite cards are not required. The only requirements are a shapely body and/or a decent face, little self-worth and a wardrobe of skimpy (stripper-like) outfits. It can be dangerous, many women may find themselves alone or outnumbered (sometimes self-inflicted and sometimes by chance) at an after party or hotel room of a celebrity who feels that money warrants them power over anyone. It’s short-lived because the entertainment world has a short attention span. A model may be in four high-profile videos. Then, directors and artists will either be tired of seeing her, or not want to offer her what she feels she is worth. Let’s face it, if your value is not increasing with every video, you’re not saving, and you don’t have any other ventures, your time could be up at any moment.

In addition, even if you want to venture out, it will be quite difficult. If you want to act, how likely are you going to have the opportunity to audition for REAL movies when everyone has seen all your being on the inside of a magazine that paid you $400. You may receive offers to play mistresses or vixens, but that’s not acting, that’s what you do anyway.

I want to say to any model that makes a living this way, I am not “hating” or putting you down for hustling. I just want you to be a smart hustler. Have other ventures, use the publicity to present another side of yourself and move forward. I’m more concerned about your ability to maintain your self-worth and self-esteem in an environment that does not respect you as a person. You have to grow, and improve everyday. As with any living thing, once you stop growing, you die.
