Exxon hit by fall in price of oil

Exxon Mobil, the world's largest oil company, has posted a sharp fall in quarterly profits after the price of oil slumped at the end of last year.

Profit for the final three months of 2008 fell to $7.8bn (£5.4bn), down 33% on the same period a year ago.

Profits for the full year hit $45.2bn, up from $40.6bn in 2007, breaking Exxon's own record for the biggest annual profit for a US company.

Rival Chevron saw fourth quarter profits rise slightly to… Continue

Common Deceptive Credit Practices

Deceptive or misleading practices are everywhere. The aim is to make you pay more than you should for goods and services, or make you pay for things you don't need. Whether it's misleading advertising, wrong assumptions, or outright lies, the result is the same: you may pay more than you should for what you get.

These are some common deceptive credit practices:

President Obama has called the contraction of the US economy in the final quarter of 2008 a "continuing disaster" for the US.

Speaking at the White House, he also announced a new task force to help middle-class working families.

US economic output fell 3.8%, the worst quarterly contraction in more than 26 years, official figures have shown.

Stimulus planned

The rate decision came shortly before the US House of Representatives approved President Barack Obama's $825bn economic recovery plan.

The two-year scheme includes temporary tax cuts and money for education, infrastructure, renewable energy programmes and health care.

It must now be passed by the Senate.

In addition, new Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said he was looking at reforms to the government's $700bn rescue scheme for banks.

New strategy

The strategy of buying government bonds mirrors the so-called quantitative easing carried out by the Japanese government when it was fighting deflation in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Deflation becomes more of a risk as interest rates approach zero.

It is a serious problem for an economy because people postpone making any large purchases as they believe prices are going to fall, which stifles economic activity even further.

In addition to cutting rates to… Continue

US interest rates kept near zero

US rates are expected to remain low for some time

The US Federal Reserve has kept interest rates unchanged but has pledged to "employ all available tools" to revive the economy.

Last month, the central bank cut rates as low as they can go - to a range of zero to 0.25%.

The Fed said it was prepared to use more unconventional monetary policy, such as buying long-term government debt, to improve… Continue

DEAR MR. PRESIDENT

February 1, 2009

Dear Mr. President:

I thought it was a great gesture for the Inaugurate Committee to invite the Tuskegee Airmen, the Little Rock Nine, etc. There is also a mother and daughter living in the shadows of the White House who were the early pioneers on the front lines of the Civil Rights Movement. Due to an honest oversight by the committee they were not invited. There are few who are aware of the… Continue

So a few days into the madness (Hurricane Katrina's aftermath) I was trying to get home before curfew (Martial Law) when I got to a spot where there were lots of trees and debris still in the street. As I was trying to find a path to get through all the obstacles, I heard a man yelling. He sounded close, but his voice was weak. Even though I had no… Continue
