Over the period of 20 plus years, I have interviewed many people, been interviewed by many people, recorded and collected thousands of historical moments in our history BUT NEVER BEFORE HAVE I INTERVIEWED MYSELF. Not knowing exactly how this will go, LET'S GET STARTED.
SELF: How does if feel being 65 years old and what does your future hold?
HASSAN: Well I must say that to me there is very little difference in how I felt at 25 . I may not be able to run as fast or as long but I wouldn't know that without trying. That has to do with my physical limitations (which I should probably use more often) but mentally and spiritually I feel better than when I was 25.
SELF: Do you separate the physical from the mental and spiritual... if so how?
HASSAN: The brain is an amazing mussel. Although a person seemingly is unable to do things like lift a car up off of their child, it has been done by many a mother when their beloved child is there and no one to help in sight. I DON'T THINK YOU CAN SEPARATE THEM TOTALLY BUT YOU CAN PLACE MORE FOCUS ON ONE AT A TIME. The one that you give the attention is the one that gets the POWER at that time. I have been more focused on the Mental and Spiritual but as of one week ago, I have switched the gears and started to balance my focus on the Physical as well in order to balance my total self more. And YOU "SELF" are the benefactor.
SELF: What brought on this new focus and what are you doing differently and why?
HASSAN: Well, I am on a 40-day colon cleansing and repurifycation fast and I am beginning to workout a little. I've been wanting to do this and make this shift for a number of years but didn't feel the urge enough to do so but the number 65 has brought it on.. My desires to accomplish my dreams always came first as I am a workaholic towards accomplishments. I'm still talking bout FOCUS... I have been known to give myself a deadline for something to be complete and when I see the time ticking away, I go into overdrive in order to complete that task on time.
SELF: Why do you do that to yourself and give us some examples?
HASSAN: I WANT TO KNOW THAT I CAN. I can give several examples but there are two that sticks out the most: 1. was when I was working on my second Clip Art CD from the computer that I had worked out with Kinkos to use in exchange for products after they were finished. I didn't have a workable computer at home and in order to get this project finished, I sat on the computer literally for 28 hours straight until I finished. 2. was to complete my 1997 Black History & Today Calendar. I had made a deal with a good printer to print 5,000 calendars at a super price and someone had advanced me the money (based on a previous calendar) for the printing but I needed to do the layouts of all the pages of information which I also had to research and type several entries into each day of the year. I didn't keep a record but the eating of food and sleep was not a priority for days. 3. another time when I was living in Dallas, I was given an assignment when I was public relations director for the Nation of Islam, The assignment was to spearhead an event with Muhammad Ali as the keynote guest of honor. Cver the past 3 years, this event ( Muhammad's Bazaar) had only drawn about 200 people most of whom were members. I had only 6 weeks to work with. The 1st thing I did was to change the name to 'BLACK FAMILY DAY' and create a handsome logo.. Then I recruited key organizations within the Black community to endorse this event with a change of venue to the Market Hall which is one of the largest facilities in Dallas for the event. I then solicited the aid of Tom Joyner
who was not yet the fly jock. On the day of that event, 20,000 people showed up and everything went off as planned except my part of the income.
SELF: So you are an Artist, an Event Planner and Organizer and now you are building this on-line community. We are probably skipping over a lot of your amazing life but what do you do for fun and when do you get that time in?
HASSAN: I am glad you ask that because I do like to have the type of fun that is not considered work. GOING TO THE BEACH is my favorite. Traveling to new places is fun. Meeting new people of interest is fun too. My fun is not the typical watching someone on TV or a Movie is not really all that fun. I also like to take in a good Reggae concert where I can dance all night. Sitting and just watching the performance is not as fun to me. I like to be the participant and not in ritualistic order.
SELF: Speaking of rituals, what if any rituals do you perform?
HASSAN: Trying everyday in the best way I know how to HELP somebody. Help them to see what I see and the experience the joys of CREATING, SHARING, CARING, FORGIVING AND LOVING That is my daily ritual. My 65th Earthday has afforded me new privileges which I will exercise as rituals. Receiving benefits monthly and such will be my fixed rituals along with taking better care of my mental, spiritual and physical balance.
SELF: You didn't mention a Religion what...
HASSAN: I see where you are headed. Natural is always better than man made and Religion (all of them) are man made. You can trace any Religion back to a man who had a vision just like me. A man who wrote a book or lived a life just like me. A man who probably started out wanting to help somebody just like me but their followers came along. The followers wanted to make it the ONE AND ONLY thus dividing the practices (rituals) from other good positive people who called their Religion by any other name.
SELF: So you don't believe in the Bible, Jesus, Muhammad anybody?
HASSAN: The right answer is to say YES - then I would be a follower only. Whoever wrote the Bible copied it from other writings and that has been proven into the fact zone. Jesus and Muhammad were great in their day and did great works but both have said and we all know that we have GREATER WORK yet to perform today. I don't waste time paying homage ONLY when by doing the works, I am exercising all of the same principles that they all prescribed to. The actual works is the ritual not worshiping the works of others. That again is a side line issue. We must get involved in the work of today. Calling names is not the work. Reading the scriptures from yesterday is not the work. Going to a prescribed place is not necessary the work. However, I MAY DECIDE TO GO THE ANY OR ALL OF THOSE PLACES TOO because my people are there and I refuse to separate myself as those who have done before me saying that they have THE ONLY WAY.
SELF: You know that you have many people waiting to talk with you on today YOUR EARTHDAY so let’s continue this INNERVIEW LATER… THANK YOU HASSAN!
HASSAN: Let’s do that because I have so much to share AND AT 65, I HAVE COME ALIVE… Thank you my Self.
