Utah electric ratepayers will dig a little deeper to pay their power bills, following the approval of a $33.4 million rate hike for Rocky Mountain Power by the Utah Public Service Commission.
The 2.4 percent increase will cost the average residential customer approximately $16 per year, according to a commission news release Monday evening.
In December 2007, the utility requested an increase of $161.2 million or 11.3 percent. In March, the commission issued an order requiring the company to reduce its rate-increase request to $99.8 million.

A recommendation to the state's utility-regulating panel would grant the Ameren Illinois utility companies the bulk of a rate increase they've been seeking since last year.
It wasn't clear yet exactly what the impact would be on electric and natural gas customers of AmerenIP, AmerenCIPS and AmerenCILCO if the Illinois Commerce Commission adopts the recommendation without revising it. A commission vote is expected by October.
In general, however, customers of AmerenIP would get hit the hardest with delivery-rate hikes, while customers of AmerenCILCO would see some decreases in those rates. AmerenCIPS customers would fall somewhere in the middle, experiencing increases that are less than for AmerenIP.
